The Directorate of Town & Country Planning (DTCP) is the statutory body in the state of Tamil Nadu responsible for land-use planning, development control and regulation of layouts, buildings and infrastructure in areas outside the metropolitan body-jurisdiction. In Tamil Nadu it is constituted under the Tamil Nadu Town & Country Planning Act, 1971 (Act 35 of 1972) which provides that the Government may declare planning areas, appoint planning authorities, prepare master plans and regulate development.
Under the Act, the DTCP has jurisdiction over the entire state of Tamil Nadu except certain areas (for example the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) region).
In addition to the DTCP’s state-wide role, the Act provides for New Town Development Authorities (NTDAs) and local planning authorities for specific areas.
